Early Chancery Court record book, opened, with Loose Chancery record Chancery Court Records

When the Circuit Court system in Tennessee became over extended the State legislature took steps to alleviate the problem by introducing a Chancery Court which would hear cases of equity.  This distinctly divided the two courts into Courts of law (Circuit) and equity (Chancery). In 1824 the State Legislature established Roane County as a District Chancery Court for the counties of Knox, Anderson, Morgan, Rhea, Hamilton, Campbell, McMinn, Monroe, and Blount. In April of 1832, Monroe County became District Chancery Court for the counties of Monroe, McMinn and Blount.  Blount County established their own Chancery Court in 1850, but Monroe County Chancery Court served as a District Court for both Monroe and McMinn Counties until 1877.

CHANCERY COURT LOOSE RECORDS contain the loose paper pleadings filed in the Monroe County, TN Chancery Court, and contain the original pleadings, such as complaints, answers, depositions, summons, final judgments, etc.  Some files are complete, but most files do not contain all the original documents filed in each case.

For Chancery Court records prior to 1832, please contact the Chancery Court for Roane County, TN at 865-376-2487.

For Chancery Court records past the dates mentioned below, please contact Robert Pennington, our Clerk and Master, or one of his staff at 423-442-2644.
